Interview with the Author of Job Searching with Social Media For Dummies - CareerEnlightenment.com

Directly after that what you referenced was, you went out to simply go to the market and begin to meet individuals. It wasn't as though you were searching for a position, you were beginning to meet individuals. So here and there, did the way that they were dealing with your desires that there may not be a vocation for 3-6 months that gave you the inclination that you expected to accomplish something sort of changed your center a tad it sounds like?Joshua Waldman: Yeah it changed my concentration and obviously I went after positions. You need to so as to keep up joblessness advantages, and I did. I strolled into prospective employee meetings, and you know, honestly I'll reveal to you one experience I had.I strolled into a prospective employee meet-up and I was so ill-equipped thus uninterested in this organization. I simply chose to express yes to all that they asked me. They inquired as to whether I had ever sold green development previously, and I replied, Yea, I like colorific ligh ts, there was some piece of me that was simply not keen on working. Some portion of it was on the grounds that they said hang tight for a quarter of a year prior anticipating that anything should occur. Yet in addition when you're laid off it's horrible. It harms; it was extremely excruciating experience, existentially, for me. I would stroll into an organization and I might want the organization for instance and afterward the main thing I could consider was, Amazing, cool organization.. I wonder what it might feel want to get laid off from here?I simply wasn't ready.David Kushan: Ok. So you get out there and you adopt the strategy of beginning to meet individuals, and your utilizing web based life for that. You additionally discussed how you would meet individuals and ask how you could help them. What can individuals who are not as acquainted with these instruments as you seem to be, what they can begin to do and how perhaps thy need to take a gander at things a tad diversely in lig ht of these devices that are available?Joshua Waldman: I was at an initiative preparing a few years prior; it was an extremely little gathering just seven or eight of us. Part of the gang in the room drinks brew, watches football, and possesses a reclamation organization. These are people who chop down immense trees and fix floods and that sort of stuff. You know, huge overwhelming hardware administrators. He kind of had this enemy of woohoo raidar going on and I mentioned to him what I did.I stated, Hello, I assist individuals with securing positions utilizing internet based life. He began laughing. He stated, Goodness truly? That has no significance to me.So I got some information about his latest recruit. He said he was attempting to locate a front work area individual; he had three competitors, and Googled one of them. She looked great on a resume, however when I Googled her it turns out she was an intriguing artist in her past job. So he excluded her.I asked him, Let me know aga in how you don't utilize web-based social networking in your recruiting process?Everyone does, regardless of whether they don't let it out. Everybody. Truth be told work rights in 2013 expressed that spotters are currently at 94% selection of web-based social networking and every one of them plan on investing more energy and cash utilizing online life to construct their groups. It's universal to change the situation. On the off chance that you don't have a clue how to utilize it deliberately you become one of those sorry measurements of individuals who are ending up in occupations that they don't generally like.David Kushan: That bodes well. What might you say from what you find in the market at this moment or similarly as you're glancing around at a portion of the online life apparatuses out there or the systems out there, what are a few things that are extremely simple for individuals to do that from what you've seen they're simply not doing?Joshua Waldman: Number one is to think about your message first. We have a shinny objects disorder issue in our general public and it's not this nation it's actually the premise of our entire economy, is hovered around this misrepresentation that innovation will take care of our issues and it's not it never has. On the off chance that you read a portion of the futurists and monetary reporters back in the fifties and sixties, they were stating precisely the same thing that we are stating now. Were coming up short on vitality, innovation is causing more desires on profitability and our personal satisfaction is going down. These things hover around this misrepresentation that we think innovation is going to make our carries on with simpler. So when we hear web based life is the best approach to propel your vocations. The intuition that has been bored into us since the day we were conceived is to go and thoroughly utilize the innovation. Simply go on LinkedIn and round out your profile. Go on Facebook and round out your prof ile. Begin tweeting. The issue with this methodology is that you haven't pondered the system yet. So what can happen is you seemed to be by and large saucy to the view of the selection representative who is searching for quite certain things. They have quite certain jobs they have to fill. In case you're only on there in light of the fact that it will take care of your issues, by simply being there, you're not going to get far. That's a mix-up many individuals make. What I would propose you do is hinder a smidgen. Acknowledge the truth that you must be on LinkedIn yet it's not all by itself the arrangement. The arrangement is the manner by which you take part in the innovation. So consider that message first before you begin rounding out that profile. What was that one thing you need an enrollment specialist or recruiting director to recollect about you? Make an interpretation of THAT to be steady over the entirety of your informing and profiles and posts with the goal that you are o n brand and on target.David Kushan: That's an incredible point. I invest a ton of energy in conversing with individuals about the things they that they have to do to be seen as a master in the commercial center and when individuals are out looking of their next all day work or next agreement I state to them, it's not tied in with getting interviews, it's tied in with getting the perfect situation for yourself and would you rather situate yourself to get two meetings and have a 90% possibility of every one of the two meetings hitting you up with an offer? Or then again being someone that ten organizations will talk with you for however you have a three percent chance at being offered any of the positions.Joshua Waldman: Exactly. Previously, perhaps five years back advancement hands on search was what number of utilizations you conveyed, what number of resumes you conveyed. I think nowadays it's an alternate discussion. It's what number of new individuals have you had discussions with ? How on track is your message?David Kushan: If you were to talk with someone who possibly listening at this moment, that is curious about with what's out there. Would you be able to impart to them a short diagram of each and where they fit into a general strategy?Joshua Waldman: Studies are coming out strengthening that it's the huge three that you truly must be focusing on and it relies upon the point of view. On the off chance that you're looking from the selecting point of view, LinkedIn, Facebook and afterward twitter are the request for need. In case you're looking from the activity searchers point of view, you're entirely going to discover better karma on Facebook in all honesty for a few key reasons.Number one the sheer size of Facebook. There are such huge numbers of individuals utilizing it effectively a great deal. Since chart search has been turned out to everyone, which is the place you can utilize regular language search to experience the whole open record of Facebook' s data on individuals. So for instance on the off chance that you needed to discover companions of companions who work at Cisco in Hawaii… you could discover them with no issue. At that point, since they are companions of companions you can request that presentation and begin having discussions with individuals. I don't think we have even started to clasp the intensity of facebooks chart search now and there's not many individuals discussing it. What we can be sure of is that organizations want to have interior referals. Interior referals will in general be progressively fruitful up-and-comers. We know interior referals originate from representatives and afterward family. Well theory which system has your loved ones? It's Facebook.I believe there's this peculiar partition that individuals have intheir head of individual and expert. That quite existed before these systems came to fruition. Fifty years back your companions were from work and your family employed you. SO there was ne ver a partition between your own and proficient and in light of the fact that these systems have made these bogus diconomies doesn't mean we need to fall go to them. On the off chance that our companions and our family have consistently refered us to potential chances, at that point why not exploit that and use Facebook for proficient systems administration? What's up with that? Truly numerous individuals do, do that. Something on the fringe of 18 million Americans have landed their positions using facebook. It's no little number. The next most significant is LinkedIn in light of the fact that this is the place scouts hang out. Something like half of LinkedIn's client base are selection representatives. So spotters use LinkedIn like a major database and interestingly, the more enrollment specialists you have in your system, and the better your profile is, the more you're probably going to appear in query items. So such an aloof way to deal with LinkedIn. Look extraordinary, have an i ncredible profile, have a major system that is deliberately developed with enrollment specialists in your industry and your odds of getting found go up.That's an extremely uninvolved approach to move toward your activity search. You can likewise move toward it substantially more proactively and utilize the propelled search highlights of LinkedIn and discover people who work at organizations you accomplish need to work for and afterward contact them for data and interviews.David Kushan: I simply had an idea that flew into my brain. I needed to state that the remarks you made on each of those are amazing and what I took from this is you truly discussing an outlook move that needs to happen before the devices can be utilized, number one and number two, utilize the devices successfully and that is the change that is going on the present moment. The model that you gave with the individual before all else, they are as of now

Keep Yourself Safe in the Heat

Keep Yourself Safe in the Heat Staying Trained to Keep Yourself Safe in the Heat Extended exposure to heat causes our body to lose a significant amount of water and electrolytes. It’s a huge concern for people who are part of the construction industry where the employees are often faced with rising temperatures and often, poor ventilation. To protect these workers, companies are required to adhere to OSHA’s health and safety guidelines. To ensure that workers are well-informed and trained regarding this matter, they are encouraged to acquire OSHA outreach training. As they say, it’s always better to be safe than sorry, and this is especially true for those employees whose job performance is largely dependent on their health. One very important factor often overlooked concerning this subject is the role of humidity in shaping working conditions. To learn more about that, check out these pointers that will raise your awareness on how humidity can affect our body temperature and our health: Humidity affects how we feel Most of us might recall humidity as the weather man’s favorite thing to blame for those muggy and steamy days we get every summer. Workers are very sensitive to humidity. The higher the relative humidity, the less efficient sweating will become. As humidity rises, sweat just won’t evaporate.   Since sweating is the primary way our bodies cool off, the heat in our body sticks around for much longer in humid conditions. For workers who are exposed to the sun or assigned in an enclosed working area, this spells immediate trouble. What happens when our body gets overexposed to heat? Our body is working tirelessly to maintain a constant temperature around 98.6 F; anything higher can make us prone to illnesses such as: Heat cramps â€" among the most common illness caused by the sudden rise in temperature, heat cramps usually hit the muscles being used during work. The spasms happen when the body fails to replenish lost body salts. Heat rash â€" a red or pink rash that usually pops up on body areas that are covered in clothing. The rashes develop when the sweat ducts become blocked and swollen. Aside from being itchy, the rashes can also be painful under extreme exposure. Heat exhaustion â€" occurs when the person has been thoroughly working under high temperatures for too long. They can become nauseous, experience headaches, and will eventually lead to dehydration. Heat stroke â€" one of the most well-known and serious condition caused by extreme heat. During an attack, the body temperature can soar to dangerous levels above 100 F, which may trigger complete or partial loss of consciousness. Heat stroke victim requires immediate medical attention and is considered a medical emergency. There are a lot of factors that can contribute to the sudden rise of temperature in the workplace, but for the construction industry, a shift in humidity is among the usual suspects that put workers at risk. It’s very important for employees to undergo OSHA Outreach training so that they’ll be equipped with sufficient knowledge about the effects of humidity and other hazards in the environment.

On the off chance that you stay with it and practice long enough you can procure the rewards. This video sums up all the principle ideas from his book, and he closes the discourse with him playing the Ukelele. It doesn't need to be 20 hours at a stretch. Be that as it may, it can 30 minutes per day for 40 back to back days, and you can get the skill.I recall when I needed to acquire my Drivers License, I took a crack at the Driving School; I reliably rehearsed with the assistance of my instructor. In half a month (15 to 25 Hours) I had the option to figure out how to drive on General Roads to get my G1 License. How to Show Culture Fit to a Potential Employer - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

How to Show Culture Fit to a Potential Employer - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach Research shows that 43% of employers view culture fit as the most important factor when assessing a job candidate. Unsurprisingly, you’ll find quite a bit of advice online which claims to reveal how you can show culture fit to a potential employer. However, it seems to me that most of this advice steers you in the direction of being someone you’re not. “Act this way”. “Look this way.” “Demonstrate the company’s values.” “Don’t forget to speak the company’s language.” This type of advice might help you get a foot in the door. it might even help you fit into a company’s culture. However, it’s also likely that you’ll be quite miserable once you’re at that company because you’ll need to put on a mask for as long as you work there. Let me suggest that there’s a better way. In this article I’ll show you how to: find a company where you fit in with the company culture demonstrate on your resume that you’re a good fit for that company’s culture prepare for the culture fit interview So, What Is ‘Culture Fit’? In its simplest sense, it’s an alignment of your values with those of your employer. For example, if the company believes in democracy and loose oversight, it would have a flat hierarchy, with no (or few) line managers; it would give you a lot of autonomy and expect you to be personally accountable for producing results. A culture like this is a dream come true if you tend to be entrepreneurial in your approach to work. However, if you’re used to rigidity, process, oversight and rules, you’d feel quite uneasy in this kind of culture. Why Is Culture Fit Important? Remember, culture fit is as important for you the employee as it is for an employer. You could be the best engineer in the world, but if you believe that fossil fuels are evil, then you’d never be happy at BP, regardless of the position or salary. In other words, your core values must align with the company you want to work for. If they don’t, then no matter how much you want to work there, there’s a good chance you’ll never feel you fit into the company’s culture. Showing Culture Fit In Your Job Application. Now that you understand why you need to show culture fit to a potential employer, it’s time take a closer look at how to do it. Below is a breakdown of 7 key strategies that will help you. Do Your Homework. Step one is simply about developing a better understanding of the company you’re applying to. Here are some ideas to guide you. Company website: Pay special attention to the language used on the ‘about us’ and ‘our team’ pages. Is the tone friendly and relaxed? Corporate and smart? Social Media: What is the tone on Twitter? What kind of articles can be found on Facebook? LinkedIn profiles: Look at the LinkedIn profiles of existing employees. Do they mention the work they do at the organisation? If so, what is said about it? Get experience as a customer: Try to get into the sales funnel if you can (e.g. newsletters, blog subscriptions, website membership) as you’ll get a good insight into how they treat potential customers. Browse Company Reviews on Glassdoor: A kind of TripAdvisor for employers, this review site displays reviews from real staff on thousands of organisations. Don’t simply listen to opinions pay close attention to what kinds of people leave which opinions. Talk to employees: If you can, have a coffee with a current employee. Ask them what the management think is important. What are the core values and do they live by them? Be Sceptical About The Company’s Propaganda. It’s time for a reality check. Be open to the idea that most of the information you’ve uncovered in the step above is false. Company websites tend to be aspirational in nature. In other words, they tend to describe how the company wants to be seen, rather than what it is. Social media activity is not necessarily a sign of a progressive culture. Look between the lines do you see signs of a robust, intelligent social media and content strategy? Or are you looking at results of a “tick-the-box” effort? Be Sceptical About People’s Opinions. When you meet people from a company you’re interested in, make sure you meet more than one. When you meet them, go deeper than polite chit-chat. Your aim is not to get a person’s opinion (those will vary); the real value is in figuring out what kind of people succeed at the company and what kind of people fail. Here are a few questions that will allow you to dig deeper: “What’s your story? How did you end up at XYZ Company?”. This is a useful starting question which can provide you with some insight about the pathways that people take. “What’s the recruitment process like?”. This can give you a heads-up about things you need to prepare / look out for. “Why have you stayed there for this long?” This question allows you to look deeper than “this company is good/bad” analysis. If someone works there because “the company is, like, so cool” and you want to work with people who challenge you intellectually, this could be a red flag. “What is the company up to?”. If a company is not clear on its direction, then the employees won’t be. Do you want to work for a company which isn’t sure why it exists? Also, do the employees genuinely care about the company’s mission, or are just paying lip service to it? “What is annoying/frustrating about XYZ?”. A sign of annoying/frustrating things is not a problem in itself (every company is imperfect). A sign of a culture of complaint is. With this question, you’re essentially inviting the person to complain. Watch their response closely. Do they gossip? Do they blame? “What have you learned / how have you developed since starting at XYZ?”. This will give you insight into how the company develops its people. “If you could rewind time, would you take the job at XYZ again?”. This can provide you with insight into the gap between the company’s promises and realities. This is not, by any means, an exhaustive list. For more ideas, check out this excellent piece about testing for culture fit. Write Your Resume. Once you have figured out what the company’s culture is, and you believe that you and the company are a good match, it’s time to fine-tune your resume. Now, I highly recommend that you begin by having your resume written by a professional resume writer (make sure you read this  guide to choosing the best resume writer), or you spend a considerable amount of time learning how to write a resume and then follow the advice closely. It means you’ll already have a solid resume which communicates your value to an employer. However, some tweaks may be necessary to ensure that your resume is perfectly tuned to each job you apply for. For example: In the ‘Professional Profile’ section of your resume, ensure that you emphasise the values that match the organisations and, if possible, how they tie in with your value proposition as a professional. Make sure your ‘Key Skills’ section succinctly summarises those skills that demonstrate your fit within the culture. For example, are you an empowering leader, entrepreneurial or process-driven. In your ‘Previous Employment’ section, make sure your positions are described using the same language as your potential new employer. Depending on the companies you’ve worked for previously you may need to shake off some of the corporate jargon or lose the creative ‘fluff’. Seriously consider using a different resume for each position you apply for so you can truly align your values. We’re talking subtle variations a full blown realignment would call into question your overall cultural fit. Prepare Your Cover Letter. Your covering letter is another great place to emphasise how well you would fit into a corporate culture. For example, you can use sentences like: “The role of XXXX really caught my eye because [demonstration of a core value].” Or if speculative: “I am now looking for a role in an organisation that aligns with my [demonstration of a core value].” Use the covering letter to reinforce why you’re a great fit. Ensure That Your LinkedIn Profile Echoes Who You Are. Don’t forget about your LinkedIn profile! Ensure that it communicates that overarching narrative of who you are, what you do and how you do it. My advice here is to think about you, rather than the organisation. For example: What are your core values? How do your skills and achievements align with those values? What causes do you believe in and advocate for? What characterises your leadership style? Prepare For The Job Interview. So, you’ve bagged that interview! What now? If you’ve done your homework, this should be the easy part. Remember, your job is not to fit in with the company’s culture (that’s what we all tried to do in high school how did that work out?) it’s to find a company where you’re a cultural match. Therefore, if you remember anything, remember this: avoid the temptation to pretend someone you’re not at all costs. However, do spend some time reflecting on who you are, what you stand for, what you care about and what you oppose. I personally find that going for a long walk in a park or along a beach is the most conducive way of doing this. Carry a notepad and take down insights as they come to you. (Ah, who are am I kidding who carries a notepad these days? Just bring your phone). Finally, prepare yourself for some interview trickery. You’ll find plenty of advice about this online, or hire an excellent interview coach. Think about how you’d answer competency questions angled toward culture fit, e.g. “tell me about a time that your belief in [VALUE] was challenged” or “how would you react if your job role suddenly changed?” Key Point To Remember. Culture fit is as important for you as it is for them. In any interaction, you’re assessing your suitability just as much as they are. There’s little point in getting your dream job if it turns out to be in an organisation that gives you nightmares.

diversity reports

decent variety reports I plunked down this evening to peruse LinkedIn's recently discharged 2017 Diversity Talent Report. Halfway through, in the wake of seeing various intriguing details LinkedIn had gathered from its gigantic database, I began to see a glaring exclusion. For a report about assorted variety, there were no photographs of dark individuals. To gut check myself, I sent the report to my group at PowerToFly and they affirmed what I wasn't seeing. They additionally brought up that Asian, White and Southeast Asian ladies appeared to be the prevalent faces in the photographs LinkedIn picked. LinkedIn plainly set aside the effort to pick various subjects for its pictures - they simply didn't set aside enough effort to look at on the off chance that they were leaving American's biggest racial minority - African Americans. The oversight is especially weird on the off chance that you consider the incredible exhortation LinkedIn remembers for the report around building comprehensive conditions where ev erybody can feel they have a place. One of the activity focuses LinkedIn proposes is to:Highlight different models of fruitful administration. Show ladies there is more than one course to the top. Point to good examples and talk about how she can expand on her own qualities, aptitudes, and needs. This activity thing is established in investigate that shows how much ladies, particularly in STEM, need to realize how individuals who appear as though them are prevailing at an organization. The general exercise here is follow LinkedIn's recommendation when working out substance and assorted variety activities for your organization - the report is a suggested perused. Yet, gain from their misstep - don't simply say you're going to include underrepresented minorities, really do it! So you don't need to experience the whole report, I've included all the pictures underneath. The (Re)Birth of Dreams, or What I Learned at The World Domination Summit 2013 - When I Grow Up

The (Re)Birth of Dreams, or What I Learned at The World Domination Summit 2013 - When I Grow Up I understood this end of the week that Ive quit dreaming. It began in my throat, shutting everything down not allowing in as much air as Im used to. It headed out to my eyes, stinging them as they watered up. I attempted to inhale profound to redress, to pre-emptively stop the hysterics. It didnt feel like a light cry. It felt like, in the event that I let the tears falls, they would be all-expending. What's more, I was befuddled. Darren Rowse was in front of an audience, talking about dreams. He began with his fantasies from when he was a youngster, at that point an adolescent, an undergrad, a picture taker, a business person, a spouse, a Dad. Photograph utilized with consent by means of Chris Guillebeaus Flickr account. At that point, he pointed the focus on us. Taking a gander at my notes, by and large, he didnt state anything I didnt truly hear previously, despite the fact that it was almighty stuff. What were doing well currently shapes our future. Enormous things frequently start as little things. Sustain the present little things that stimulate you. Become fixated on making arrangements and being valuable. Put aside time to make and complete. What sort of future will you make? I just let the tears fall once, discreetly, and I had the option to flicker them away until Clare went ahead stage and sang Amazing Life. I super urge you to squeeze Play on the video underneath, close your eyes, and give yourself the endowment of these ~4 minutes. I thought of who I was as a young lady, composing melodies in my room and imagining I was Debbie Gibson. I thought of who I was as a young person, fixated on musicals and recklessly determined bowed edly headed for Broadway. I thought of who I am as a grown-up, and I got.scared. I have dreams, however I can see now that Ive bolted them away. I hear myself keenly discussing my business objectives having the option to help my whole family, distributing more books, arriving at a huge number of individuals, being viewed as a specialist in my field. In any case, there are Bigger, Scarier Dreams in the air. Ones where I change *millions* of lives. Where I have my own TV program. Where I have a city house and a nation house. Where I perform on the customary. Where theres overly quality time with my loved ones, frequently. Where I have a group of individuals who work for me full-time. Where I can satisfy the fantasies of my entire family. It wasnt until my throat began to throb and my eyes starter to water that I understood Ive been pushing those fantasies in a storeroom in my brain. Theyre supplanted by being consistent and reasonable and sensible. Its all that I remain against heck, its what I help my customers work past! in any case, here I am. As I state regularly, its why holistic mentors have life mentors. The World Domination Summit had me tap into my fantasies in the present time and place, as a multi year elderly person of the World. I realize that returning my mind in another place is the best procedure for me to essentially satisfy my objectives and make these dreams a reality. It even gave me a window into these fantasies, thanks to the uber-accomplishment of our Declaration of You Book Lovin Par-Tay Jess I at our book table toward the start of the night. 2ish hours after the fact, every one of the 57 of these books were no more! Huzzah! what's more, making my Oprah wishes work out as expected by encouraging a QA in front of an audience before 300 individuals at the Indie Kindred screening from left-right: Jonatha Brooke, Jolie Guilleabeau, Liz Kalloch, Christine Mason Miller, Liz Lamoreux, Jen Lee and me. I know, right?! Photograph taken from Vivienne McMasters Instagram (much obliged, Viv!) Both left me with a sentiment of amazement and marvel, of appreciation and harmony, of solidarity and simplicity. My fantasies are working out as expected, and I need them out of the storeroom everlastingly, for good. What do you see when you put your mind in another place? Is it safe to say that you were a visionary as a child, however have ended it as a grown-up? What was a fantasy of yours that has just worked out? Tell me in the remarks.

Stuck in a Career Rut 5 Steps to Get Out of It

Stuck in a Career Rut 5 Steps to Get Out of It Do you wake up every morning dreading the commute to work? Do you count the seconds until your lunch break? Are you jealous of friends who are happy with their jobs? Do you ever wonder what life would be like in a parallel universe? Yes? Then the chances are, you’re stuck in a career rut. Years ago at university, I took on a part time job as a shop assistant for a well-known British fashion label. On my first day I was introduced to the team, and learnt that my floor manager was looking for another job. “I’ve been here for 3 years” he said “I only wanted to be here for a summer, I have a degree in Graphic Design”. He was pretty bitter about it. When I left a year later, he was still there and as far as I’m aware, still is. Career ruts are like quicksand, easy to slide into, difficult to get out of. Whether you started a job and subsequently got swept away with the tide, or stagnated in what used to be in your dream position don’t despair, theres a light at the end of the tunnel. Even if you hate your job, the good news is that the fact that you’ve already got one will work to your advantage. It’s a sad fact of life, but recruiters are more attracted to the employed than the unemployed. The bad news is that finding the job you were destined to do is going to involve a bit of legwork. As the saying goes though, hard work pays off and the cliché is no more relevant than it terms of your career. So lets get started. Lesson #1 Figure out why you hate your job: Is it the work or the dress code? The commute or the unreasonable deadlines? The uncomfortable office chair or your manager? Identifying exactly why youre in a career rut will help you find out what you’d be better off doing. A friend of mine, for example, had an awesome job as a city architect. Her bugbear, however, was the fact that she had to travel an hour to get to work every day, from one side of London to the other, and back again. After a year of slogging it, she gave in and found a similar position closer to home. It wasn’t as well paid, but she gained an extra 2 hours a day. Worth it? She thinks so. The issue here wasn’t the work itself, and if that’s your case then a career overhaul probably isn’t the best solution. If you don’t feel challenged enough, ask for more responsibility. If you’re conflicting with a colleague, resolve it with a superior. If you hate your job and everything about, it’s time to look for a new one. Lesson #2 Work out your strengths and weaknesses: I used to see a therapist who had spent the majority of his twenties managing a hotel restaurant. He began to notice that as well as running the place, he spent a lot of time listening to his staff and helping them solve their problems and this rapidly became his favourite part of the job. Eventually he quit the restaurant, went back to university and emerged years later as a trained counsellor. Now, I’m not suggesting that everyone quit their jobs and go back to school to train as something new. The point I’m making is that it’s ok to do something different. Try and pinpoint exactly what it is that you do best, and work out what career would be most suited to your strengths. Lesson #3 Do your research: Unless going to work every day is akin to sticking needles in your eyes, it’s ok to take your time to do some research. I’m not implying that you spend your office hours searching job boards, although that’ll have you out of the door quick enough. Simply assign some spare time each day to browsing what’s out there, and if you’re ready for it, applying for positions. Getting a grasp on the job market will help you assess what’s achievable, and what’s not. You’ll get a better idea of the skills you need for certain jobs, or if you don’t have them, what positions you could apply for to get a foot in the door. For example, you work in HR and your dream is to become an interior designer; you love decorating, trawling for furniture at the flea market and there’s a pile of ELLE Decor on your coffee table. Despite having passion, actually making that leap from office to decorator might prove tricky. However, finding a HR job in an interior design firm could be a realistic step in the right direction. Lesson #4: Be prepared: It’s realistic to say that our job market isn’t exactly thriving and the likelihood is, that it’ll take a while to find your dream position. With this in mind, it’s important to stay positive and have confidence that you will achieve your goal. Which you will if you keep at it. Being prepared mentally is half the challenge; the other part is making sure you have a killer CV and an impressive LinkedIn profile. Don’t underestimate the importance of LinkedIn and your other social networks. The chances are, that the companies you apply to will spend more time researching your online presence than reading your CV. So remove any inappropriate tweets and lock down on your Facebook privacy settings pronto. Lesson #5. Don’t be afraid of rejection: Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Walt Disney and Elvis Presley are all famous examples of people who were rejected early on in their careers. Elvis’s granddad told him to go back to driving a truck, Steve Jobs was notoriously fired from Apple, before rejoining and later becoming CEO. Did it stop them from striving toward their goals? No. Michael Jordan famously stated I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and I missed. Ive failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. The bad news is, you will face rejection. The good news is, it will make you stronger and every step you take will bring you closer to your goal. Whether it takes 5 job applications or 50, it’ll all be worth it when you land your dream job, and finally escape that career rut.
